Delta extends Medallion Status to 2023

Delta Air Lines in 2020 extended all medallion members with status in 2021 to 2021 due to the pandemic as they are aware the travelers are not traveling enough to maintain the status. Delta also helped medallion members who plan to continue to travel by rolling over all MQM from 2020 into the 2021 qualification period. As of July 2021, Delta has announced they will, in fact, extend medallion status to the 2022 Medallion year, which expires on January 31, 2023, Plus any MQM – regardless of whether or not a person holds Delta Elite Status will roll over into the 2022 qualification year which counts towards 2023 status!

Award Tickets & Global/Regional Upgrade Certificates

Delta also announced that all award tickets would continue to earn MQD, MQM, and MQS for travel through January 31, 2023. All GUC and RUC are also extended for travel with a new expiration of January 31, 2023!

Delta AMEX Benefits Extended

Unused Companion Certificates as of July 31, 2021, and Companion Certificates issued between August 1 and December 2021 will also have an extended expiration date of January 31, 2023. Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card and Delta Skymiles Reserve Business American Express Cardmembers with unused SkyClub guest passes can also receive an extension until January 31, 2023.

Medallion Accelerators until December 31, 2021

Unlike some other airlines, Delta did not actually lower its Medallion qualification requirements for 2021. Rather, it introduced a Status Accelerator Program that awards a 50% or 75% bonus on MQM, MQS and MQD earned depending on your class of service. It currently remains in effect through the end of the year.

Ordinarily, you can qualify for Delta Medallion status by completing the following flight activities in a calendar year:

  • Silver Medallion: 25,000 MQMs or 30 MQSs and $3,000 MQDs or a co-branded credit card MQD waiver
  • Gold Medallion: 50,000 MQMs or 60 MQSs and $6,000 MQDs or a co-branded credit card MQD waiver
  • Platinum Medallion: 75,000 MQMs or 90 MQSs and $9,000 MQDs or a co-branded credit card MQD waiver
  • Diamond Medallion: 125,000 MQMs or 120 MQSs and $15,000 MQDs or a co-branded credit card MQD waiver

If you were earning 50-75% bonuses on flights this year, that could make hitting status tiers a lot easier. Unfortunately, it is unlikely Delta will extend this promotion as well.
